Toubab Krewe

Some music cannot be found on a map or within iTunes categories.  Some music is so original it seems snatched from the great, invisible substrata that runs below all human activity, a sound aching to be born without a flag or fixed allegiance – free, questing, overflowing with immediate, tangible life.  This is the music of Toubab Krewe, the vibrant Asheville, NC-based instrumental powerhouse that creates a sonic Pangaea that lustily swirls together rock, African traditions, jam sensibilities, international folk strains and more.  While nearly impossible to put into any box, it takes only a few moments to realize in a very palpable way that one is face-to-face with a true original who recognizes no borders in a march towards a muscular, original, globally switched-on sound. Formed in 2005, Toubab Krewe has tenaciously honed their craft through relentless touring and a fierce dedication to carving out something they can truly call their own.  The fruits of this hard work can be heard on their latest release, TK2, (September 7, 2010 on Nat Geo Music).  What Justin Perkins (Kora, Kamelngoni, guitar, percussion), Vic Stafford (drums, congas), Drew Heller (guitar, piano, fiddle), David Pransky (bass, guitar), and Luke Quaranta (Djembe, percussion) have [...]

Maesyn

Amazin” Maesyn is an amused modern Muse and a force of nature. Her artistry encompasses a broad spectrum of natural talents. Though her favorite instrument is her wickedly dexterous whistle, she is also a heart-centered violinist, pianist, guitarist, vocalist, and songwriter, who dabbles in ukelele and the spoons. Classically trained on violin and piano since the age of 4, Maesyn composes all of her own orchestration, and thrives on improvisation. She fronts her own band, and also has performed on stage for thousands, guesting in with artists such as Matisyahu, and Killa Priest from Wu Tang Clan. She spent many moons as the singer for the conscious west coast hip-hop band, Luminaries. Her music is an amalgamation of funky grooves, sultry passionate vocals, orchestral musicality, sophisticated lyricism, and inspirational esotericism.

Iris Eve

Iris Eve conveys her message with an engaged presence, moving listeners through laughter, tears and dance, sometimes all in the same song. With emotional vocals that range from gritty to sultry, percussive finger-picking rhythms and clever, hard-hitting lyrics, it makes it hard to define her style. From songs about the shenanigans of the subconscious, to the awkward and evolving spirituality of humanity, her lyrical content isn’t afraid to go there. With plenty of energy, heart and spice, Iris has slowly but steadily built a grass-roots following on the Big Island and is emerging as potent voice for alternative, conscious, indie music. Erik Avery provides the driving bass riffs, drawing on a vast array of genres, along with his well-known animated stage presence. Kristin Johnson brings in the drum kit, using her dynamic and high-energy drumming style to engage with Iris’s original songs in an upbeat, authentic expression of ‘i-do-what-i-want-rock’ that comes up clean…. Iris Eve is currently #1 on the ReverbNation Charts for singer-songwriter on the Big Island.
